2019 Memorial Shoot Results

The St. John’s Rod and Gun Club hosted the 14th annual Memorial Shoot on Saturday, August 17, 2019.  The weather was fantastic and all events were well attended. Thanks to all that made the day possible. A special thank you goes out to the Molly, Bidgood, Anstey and Mackey families for joining us for this very special day.

These shoots involve a lot of work in planning, purchasing supplies for lunch, preparing and serving lunch, setting up Shoot courses and then taking everything down and cleaning up.  Thanks to everyone who helped out and especially those who come out to help but don't shoot.

Pictures of all events can be seen on the club’s Twitter and Facebook pages.

Update on access

The club road will be closed due to snow on Tuesday. There are no plans to plow it out again. Heavy rain is in the forecast for later in the week. Hopefully this will help clear it up.

UPDATE YOUR MEMBERSHIP INFO

To update your membership information (change of address, phone, etc.) please go to:

Join It directly

You will need the email address you used when setting up your account and the password you created.

PROSPECTIVE OR PENDING MEMBERS

If your membership card indicates that your status is Prospective, then you need to attend an Orientation. Orientation is generally done once a month. Currently there are 27 members who need to attend Orientation before they will receive the gate code and Active Status. Prospective members will receive an email when there is going to be an Orientation. They can also look for Orientation events in the Club News and on the Calendar.

If your membership card indicates Pending then there is information missing on your application. Often this is an adequate picture. The picture should be of your head and shoulders  and uploaded to your account in Jpeg format. Pictures of PAL cards, or you fishing, hunting or shooting are not acceptable.

Many of our those currently with Pending status are multi-year members who have been carried over into our new membership system. Some have uploaded ID photos, but have not updated the rest of their membership information or signed the new waiver. Pending members can log in to their membership file and update this info, after which you will receive the gate code.

Please note that an attempt or attempts have been made to contact multi-year members.

Firearms Rights Notice

If you have been affected by the banning of certain types of firearms, you may wish to participate in this action organized by the CCFR. CCFR = Canadian Coalition for Firearms Rights.

3) If you are sitting at Pending Status - make sure your photo and all other info is correct.

4) If you have been given Prospective Status and you were a member last year, email us. A small misspelling can be the issue.

5) IF RANGE C IS ACTIVE, THEN IF YOU ARE USING RANGE B AND WANT TO GO DOWN TO THE 200 YARD TARGET STAND - YOU MUST CALL/ORGANIZE A CEASEFIRE ON BOTH C AND B.

PLEASE ALWAYS SIGN IN WHEN USING THE RANGES. YOU CAN DO SO IN THE MAIN CLUBHOUSE OR LONG BRANCH.

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION

New Membership System - Join It

The Board made the decision to move to an online membership system for a number of reasons:

  1. a) Cost - it is becoming prohibitively expensive to mail out membership forms and cards. Costs include postage, materials and labor;
  2. b) Moving online allows members to update their information in a timely manner, and provides us with an up-to-date membership database;
  3. c) Join It includes email capacity, which we were paying separately for;
  4. d) Members can download an electronic membership card to store on their mobile phone, in either Apple or Google Wallet. You can also download a file you can print out;
  5. d) Many members have asked to be able to apply, renew and pay for their membership online; and
  6. e) Join It also has additional capacities that we may use in the future.

Comments:

1) Membership fee - this remains at $120.00 per year.

2) HST - the necessity to pay HST on membership is not due to the switch to Join It. The need to pay HST on top of the membership fee has to do with CRA regulations. However, we will be able to recover HST paid on materials and services that we are using.

3) There is a transaction fee in Join It to use the Stripe payment system. However, this fee greatly simplifies handling of our membership fees. They are processed and deposited directly into our bank account, with no volunteer or membership coordinator time involved.

Membership Photo  - as part of the membership process you will be asked to upload a photograph of yourself. This photo should be a head and shoulder picture, between 1 and 10 Mb in size, and uploaded in jpeg/jpg format. Pretty much the same as a photograph for your PAL.  Please give the photo a bit of time to upload and do not keep repeating trying to upload one. If the original upload did not work, we can get a photo from you and upload it later.

Pending/Provisional Status - initially your membership status will show as pending. We will change this to active once we have made sure that all the necessary fields on the membership form have been filled out correctly.

Membership Application - we recommend you fill out the application form on a computer or pad. The portal may not size well on some phones.  You will find a link to the Membership Application on the home page and under Members Info - Membership Application.

Changes to Membership System

The SJRGC is moving toward a new on-line membership system.  The details will be provided in a mail out to all members in January 2025, as well as in posts to this website.

In preparation for the change over, we are not accepting any new applications or renewals.

Your current membership is valid until the end of February 2025. Existing 3 year memberships will be honoured, but this option will no longer be available.

You will have the ability to renew or apply on-line starting in January/February 2025.

With the delays likely in the postal system, please monitor the Club website for the latest information on the availability of the new membership process.

Thank you, Board SJRGC

New Firearms Regulations

Club members are advised to carefully read the content of the new

Regulations Amending the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and Other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited or Restricted

these regulations have added to the list of banned weapons, including for example

149 The firearm of the design commonly known as the Just Right Carbines JR Carbine, and any variant or modified version of it, including the Just Right Carbines JR Pistol.

158 The firearm of the design commonly known as the Lockhart Tactical Raven rifle, and any variant or modified version of it.

170 The firearm of the design commonly known as the Ruger Police Carbine, and any variant or modified version of it, including the

  • (a) Ruger PC Carbine; and
  • (b) Ruger PC Charger.

The list also includes many .22 caliber firearms such as:

German Sport Guns GSG-15;

The firearms of the designs commonly known as the Kriss Kriss and the Kriss Kriss Vector SMG submachine guns, and any variants or modified versions of them, including the

  • (a) Kriss Kriss Vector 22 CRB;
  • (b) Kriss Kriss Vector 22 SBR;
  • (c) Kriss Kriss Vector 22 SDP;
  •

3 These Regulations come into force on the day on which they are made.

Note that:

Affected owners will no longer be permitted to sell the prohibited firearms to individuals within Canada, use or transport them except for the permitted purposes described in the Amnesty Order. The firearms will have to be kept securely stored in accordance with the legal storage requirements for the classification of the specified firearms prior to their prohibition.

Individuals may transport the firearms one time to return home with the firearm if it was not at the owner’s residence at the time the prohibition came into force, or, if not the owner and in possession of the firearm on the day the prohibition came into force, return the firearm to its owner.

The amnesty period begins on the date of coming into force of the Amnesty Order and expires on October 30, 2025. Upon the expiration of the Amnesty Order, individuals who are in possession of a prohibited firearm could be prosecuted for unlawful possession.

New Club Range Safety Officers

On Saturday July 20, Rick Igercich, President and Firearms Education and Training Chairman of the National Firearms Association, gave a Range Safety Course at the club. Rick was joined by Donald Feltham, a club member, who is Secretary of the NFA and Regional Director of Atlantic provinces for the NFA.

Twelve members of the Club participated in the course and qualified as RSOs. This is a nationally certified course with no expiry date.  Those who participated were: Andrea Bassan, Troy Coldwell, Dave Reddin, Samantha McMullin, Dan Donnelly, Evan Kearley, Christopher Tucker, Christian Winter, Brad Ryan, Doug Bursey, Gerry Carr and Herb Butt.  This group of members includes representatives all of the shooting sport groups at the club.

Patterning Shotguns

Ever wonder what your shotgun pattern actually looks like when you're breaking clays or swinging on a passing duck? Patterning your shotgun is a great way to determine how it is actually patterning at various ranges with the loads and chokes that you use.

So how do you do that? You put shot to paper!

Here is a great link that provides step-by-step instructions on patterning shotguns and checking point of impact: https://www.browning.com/support/faq/shotgun-poi.html

Target loads up to size #7.5 (i.e. #7.5, 8 & 9) can be used on the trap and sporting clays ranges; however, the most convenient location to pattern your shotgun at the club is Range C, which is approved for shotgun use using larger shot sizes typically used in hunting scenarios. Please check the club calendar before heading out to use Range C.

UPDATE FROM THE BOARD

1) The new Board has been meeting monthly in person and has had one on-line meeting to address an urgent matter. The operations of the Board have changed somewhat as we have adopted a more formal structure for full meetings, based on Robert's Rules. The most significant change is the monthly Treasurer's update. Heads of Committees also report monthly, wherein those who are on the Board report directly, while those not on the Board report via an appointed Board member. These measures were taken to keep all of the Board fully informed and educated in the way all aspects of the Club function.

2) Another change in the management of the club is that all fees collected by the various groups (Trap, Sporting Clays, Archery, Rifle/Pistol) be paid to the Treasurer at the end of each month. These monies must also include documentation of the number and names of the participants, and if they are club members or guests. For Trap and Sporting Clays there is a significant amount of Club money that must be recovered for clay targets: this year with the Atlantic Trap Championships being held here ~ $45K.

3) The Club website has undergone some changes in structure that are meant to provide information to the user in an easier fashion. We are also going through the existing content and updating or removing material.

4) Orientations continue to be held on the first Sunday of each month. We are trying to ensure that Members of the Board, representing the various groups in the Club, are present. This way our incoming member's get to meet a few of the Board, and the Board members can better explain the intricacies of their own groups.

5) Safety is a of prime importance to us all, so we are updating information and signage in areas where we felt there was a need. We are also updating our first aid kits and AED machines.

6) Based on the Chief Firearms Office inspection of the range last year, we are beginning to start repairs. These repairs impact primarily on Range B, Range C and Range A.  Work on Range B down to 50m will start on June 24th. This involves relocating the backstop at "50" yards, and installation of a new target stand at 50m. Upgrades to drainage and the range floor will be made at the same time. Additional maintenance will also be taking place on the Long Branch and main Clubhouse.

7) We have changed the way we rent the range facilities to outside organizations. These fall into 2 categories: law enforcement groups; and security companies. We are charging on a daily basis now, with the anticipation that the extra income will help us maintain the ranges and keep our membership fees low.

8) The Club continues to co-operate with the Provincial Wildlife division in supporting the BOW and Youth programs. A successful BOW event was held in May, and the Youth event will take place in late August.

9) We have been in contact with our insurer, National Firearms Association, and they will be running an RSO course for us in late July. This has restricted numbers, but we should be able to have some participants in that qualify to offer the course in-house.

10) We are in communication with the NFA about the details of our coverage. This has lead us to hire a legal consultant to rewrite our contracts with external bodies and also advise us on waivers for external users of the range.
