International Defensive Pistol Association

The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) was established in the United States in 1996. It is the governing body for IDPA competitions, which is a handgun-centric shooting sport based on simulated self-defense scenarios. The format was designed to be enjoyable to shooters of all skill levels, with a premium put on the social interaction and camaraderie. Today, it is the fastest growing shooting sport in the USA with over 300 affiliated clubs in all 50 states and membership in over 50 foreign nations.

IDPA involves the use of practical equipment (including full charge service ammunition) to solve simulated “real world” self-defense scenarios. Shooters are required to use practical handguns and concealed carry holsters that are suitable for self-defense use. No “competition only” equipment is permitted since the main goal is to test the skill and ability of an individual not his equipment or gamesmanship.

IDPA Newfoundland & Labrador

Established at the St. John’s Rod & Gun Club in March 2010, IDPA Newfoundland & Labrador (IDPANL) is the affiliated local section of IDPA Canada (which is the regional representative of IDPA International). We are also the first Canadian provincial club to be organized east of Ontario.

IDPANL seeks to promote within the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador:

Matches Schedule:

Matches typically require the use of a service type pistol or revolver of 9x19mm/.38 Special or larger caliber. Almost any “off the shelf” handgun will be suitable for IDPA matches, allowing individuals to participate with minimal investment.

Matches are typically held at Range C on the third Sunday of each month. The regular schedule is posted on the SJRGC club’s calendar.

The “Three Gun” (handgun, rifle and shotgun) matches are held on a fairly regular basis. Other events such as the Zombie Multi-Gun Shoot, and the a Cowboy Shoot occur yearly.

Annual membership in IDPANL is currently $25.00, with a match fee of $10.00. It is also required that applicants obtain and maintain a current membership with IDPA International, which allows participation in all sanctioned IDPA matches worldwide.
